Nobility

Availability: Closed

"Wayrest is one of the most glorious cities of western Tamriel: sparkling in her contemporary beauty, lustrous by her past. She is prized above all cities in High Rock -- no other city has contributed, and continues to contribute so much to the culture of the Bretons." ―Sathyr Longleat

The Nobility are the ruling class of High Rock. With no standing army representing all of High Rock, it is up to lords and ladies of the realm to rally their forces for war in the name of the King.

Playing a Noble

Playing a Noble can be a challenging but also rewarding experience. You will start with access to a weekly gold stipend, representing your wealth as a noble. As a noble you will typically have the goal of gaining a title within the realm of Wayrest, which will grant you rulership over a zone of the map. Each zone will have its own node that comes with it. Nodes will provide Nobles and their clan access to more resources, with a high chance of more rare resources.

Society: The nobility of Wayrest is deeply woven into the fabric of High Rock's feudal society. The city itself stands as a hub of politics, trade, and culture, making it an attractive center of power for noble families seeking to solidify their influence. The society is structured in a hierarchical manner, with each noble house having distinct responsibilities and privileges based on their titles and holdings.

Titles and Progression: The titles of Baron/Baroness and Duke/Duchess represent significant milestones in the life of a noble. When a noble family acquires land or a region, they typically start as a Baron/Baroness, overseeing their own domain and managing its affairs. This involves maintaining infrastructure, overseeing the local economy, and ensuring the well-being of their subjects.

As a noble family's power grows, they might expand their territory by acquiring vassals—lesser nobles who pledge their loyalty and resources. Accumulating vassals and regions allows a noble house to elevate themselves to the rank of Duke/Duchess, which will increase their stipend.

Goals and Ambitions: The nobles of Wayrest, whether they are Barons/Baronesses or Dukes/Duchesses, share common overarching goals despite the differences in their titles. These goals include:

  1. Power and Prestige: Nobles seek to enhance their family's influence and reputation. This can be achieved through diplomatic maneuvering, political alliances, and a show of force through conquest and blood.

  2. Wealth and Prosperity: Economic prosperity is a driving force. Nobles work to maximize the productivity of their lands, develop trade networks, and manage resources to ensure the financial stability of their house.

  3. Stability and Order: Nobles understand that the stability of their domains directly impacts their power. They strive to maintain law and order, address disputes, and provide protection for their subjects, thereby solidifying the loyalty of their vassals and common folk.

  4. Political Intrigue: In a society marked by complex political dynamics, nobles engage in subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle intrigue. This might involve forming covert alliances, undermining rival houses, or even orchestrating the downfall of a competitor.

Playing a noble gives you the ability to effect the politics and laws of not only the realm, but your own land that you claim, should you get the chance. It can provide interesting opportunities for conflict and many other things.

Conquest

War between the Nobles in High Rock is common, these are almost always over land, but are usually hidden behind small insults or false provications.

Such wars are not halted by kings as it keeps their subjects focused on each other rather than working to overthrow the king, as well as keeping armies trained and ready for war should the king call upon them.

In Tales of Tamriel, conquest may play a part in taking land from other nobles, which will give you access to an extra resource node.

The losing Noble can either have their title stripped, or they can be visualized with expectations of tribute or service in the future.
