Nereid

Slot Availability: Inquire on Discord

The Nereids, also known as Water-Sprites or Water Nymphs by the Redguards, are ethereal and mer-like water spirits that dwell in close proximity to bodies of water.

Their hauntingly beautiful voices can be heard singing enchanting melodies, captivating those who listen. Proficient in the arcane art of water magic, a lesser-known form of sorcery, they possess the ability to either exhibit hostility or show tolerance towards the presence of others.

Generally, the Nereids are intelligent beings who often assume the role of guardians, safeguarding the land they inhabit and its inhabitants. They may even claim ancient ruins as their own sanctuary.

Deeply connected to nature, your nereid character should demonstrate a profound appreciation for the environment, interacting gently with flora and fauna and communicating with animals and plants.

Tap into the enigmatic wisdom of nereids, offering cryptic advice and sharing ancient lore with your companions. Use melodic and poetic speech, speaking in metaphors and allegories.

Show a protective side, defending the natural balance and offering healing support to injured creatures or allies. Incorporate a playful and mischievous streak, engaging in harmless pranks or lighthearted interactions. However these creatures are unpredictable, and can very well be as malicious as they are kind.

Lore & Description

Nereids possess a feminine form reminiscent of merfolk, but with distinctive characteristics that set them apart. They have fin-like ears and skin adorned with scales and stripes, displaying a range of colors from vibrant blues to lush greens.

Their hair can vary greatly, spanning from deep black to shimmering silver, mirroring the hues of their skin. To enhance their ethereal appearance, Nereids adorn themselves with shells, seaweed, and intricately crafted coral garments.

Their attire includes metal bracers, often made of gold or plain silver, which complement their enchanting ensembles. A tattered robe of sorts drapes from these bracers, adding to their alluring allure. While they are sometimes referred to as "water-sprites," it is important to note that Nereids differ significantly from common sprites, creating an intriguing but indirect connection to the realm of Faerie.

Nereids possess a profound affinity for nature and the untamed elements, particularly pure and flowing freshwater sources. Their mystical connection to the bodies of water they inhabit allows them to assume the role of caretakers and guardians over their respective domains. They display unwavering dedication to preserving the sanctity and vitality of their homes, even if it means sacrificing the well-being of others. Any harm inflicted upon their habitats can lead to their corruption and eventual demise, causing them immense suffering. The Nereids and their mystical powers hold a certain allure for the modern races of Tamriel. For instance, the Nereid of Cicatrice dedicated years to tending to the ill, leading to the establishment of a settlement around her presence. Similarly, the Bosmer of Dread Vullain abandoned their veneration of Y'ffre in favor of the Nereid Sisters inhabiting the hills of Greenshade. Legends even speak of Queen Ayrenn of the Summerset Isles engaging in spirited dances with the Nereids of the Ilessan Hills.

However, it should be noted that corrupted Nereid pools can yield sinister consequences. One notable example is the Nereid sorceress Shada, who tainted the waters of a Nedic city in Craglorn. When the Ra Gada invaded the city in 1E 808, the Nedes struck a bargain with Shada, drinking her water in exchange for great strength and eternal life. However, this choice came at the cost of their sanity and physical form. Consequently, the city's inhabitants blindly worship Shada, and the location is now known as Shada's Tear. Another instance of corruption is observed in the case of the aforementioned Cicatrice.

Interactions with The World

Considering their elusive and shy nature, it is likely that nereids would generally avoid direct contact and interactions with other races. They would prefer to dwell undisturbed in the waters and secluded areas they call home. Nereids might have a heightened sensitivity to the presence of mortals, perceiving them as potential threats or disturbances to their natural habitats.

However, on rare occasions, when approached with respect and reverence, Nereids might be willing to share their knowledge and wisdom with individuals who demonstrate genuine curiosity and a sincere appreciation for nature. This could include select members of the races of Tamriel who display a deep affinity for the natural world or possess the ability to communicate with creatures of the wild.

Given their reputed knowledge of flora, fauna, and hidden creatures, Nereids could be sought after by scholars, herbalists, and adventurers seeking rare botanical specimens, hidden realms, or information about elusive creatures. These encounters would likely require patience, respect for their boundaries, and an understanding of their mystical connection to the natural world.

Overall, Nereids would likely maintain a cautious and guarded approach towards other races, valuing their privacy and the preservation of their aquatic domains. They would only engage in meaningful interactions when approached with reverence, trust, and a genuine desire to learn from their unique perspectives on nature.
